Dairy Herd Management

Internship Dairy Herd Management

Preferred Start Date: June 1, 2018

Stauffer Farms LLC is a 3000 cow dairy in northern St. Lawrence county NY. We raise
replacements and crop 3500 acres of corn silage and haylage. The dairy facilities are modern,
constructed over the span of 2009-2017. Wet calves are raised in a combination of calf barn
and hutches. Bigger heifers are raised in retrofitted dairy barns, with some being custom
raised. We have undergone a major expansion in 2017, and will be milking in twin parallel
parlors starting in late December of 2017. We have constructed a new maternity barn, which
will be operational in early 2018.
Stauffer Farms consists of three families. The senior generation and founders are
Sanford and Ruth. Sanford is very involved in milk marketing and cooperative activities, and
works on the farm when he is able. The animal side of the operation is managed by Aaron,
while the crop and equipment side is managed by Ben. Ben's wife Karen does the bookkeeping
and payroll. Aaron's wife Renee manages the families' charitable foundation and does some
design and organization of irregular events and functions.
The business approach of Stauffer Farms LLC is to promote efficiency in every way
possible. We have aggressively invested capital to achieve this, and are currently shipping over
1,600,000 lbs of milk per worker. We are also very comfortable investing in and learning
technology as a way to increase efficiency and profitability. Unlike many large dairies, our labor
force is predominantly local. While we traditionally have raised all forage and heifers, our
latest expansion has been made possible by entering into forage and heifer raising agreements
with neighboring farms.
