2017 NYCO Winter Meetings

January 10, 2017
10:00am - 2:00pm
Geneva, NY

The popularity of the NYCO winter meetings has grown from a gathering of six organic grain producers in the Martens Farms' farmhouse kitchen in 1994 to Jordan Hall in Geneva. Last year we had more than 300 farmers attending the 3 meetings.

To continue the tradition, the Winter NYCO meetings will be held in Jordan Hall, Geneva Experimental Station. They will be held January 10th, February 14th and March 13th. This years topics will include the use of Alternative Forages, Expanding to Poultry and Nutrient Balancing.

There is no cost or need to register to attend the meetings, which start promptly at 10:00am. Participants are asked to bring a dish to pass at the potluck lunch. The New York Crop Insurance Education Team and Cornell Cooperative Extension provide support for these meetings. There will be a brief description of how Crop Insurance can benefit organic farmers at each of the meetings.

Binghamton, NY

Growing Success for Direct Market Farmers
Friday February 10th
9am-4pm
840 Upper Front St, Binghamton, NY 13905

Meeting the needs and values of your customers is fundamental to creating a healthy long-term relationship. How to actively seek buyers is just the start. Who is your customer and why do they buy? Maintaining the relationship requires attention to details from varieties, quality, pricing, communication, sequential planting, quality control, merchandising, trends, and more. Learn how to serve the direct market ?and make your farm a highly desired source of fresh produce.

Participating farmers will receive a free copy of the Direct Market Success manual. The brand new Direct Market Success is a reference guide for farms selling in direct market venues such as farmers markets, CSAs and farm stands. Closely modeled after FamilyFarmed's Wholesale Success manual and training program, Direct Market Success is intended to be the definitive farmer's guide to selling, food safety, postharvest handling, and logistics for farmers who are seeking to enter and grow in this burgeoning consumer sector, mainly composed of farmers markets, CSAs, online retail sales, and farm stands.

The cost to attend this workshop is $20/farm or family to cover the cost of materials and food. Pre-registration is requested. To register for the workshop, visit: https://reg.cce.cornell.edu/growingsuccessdirectmarketing_203.

  • Robert A. Lynch, DVM - Cornell University PRO-DAIRY Program, Herd Health & Management Specialist
Topics:

Reducing Replacement Heifers Rearing Cost through Improved Reproductive Management
Replacement cows generated by the heifer rearing enterprise are critical to the future of dairy farms. Nevertheless, raising heifers represents a major cost burden accounting for as much as 15 to 20% of the total cost of production. Thus, minimizing the duration of the non-lactating period by reducing days to pregnancy can help reduce farm operating costs. We will present new research data evaluating different reproductive management programs for dairy heifers in commercial dairy farms. The impact of these strategies on the reproductive performance and economics of heifers during their non-lactating period and their first lactation will be discussed.

Fresh Cow Calcium Supplementation- To Treat or Not to Treat
A recent large trial conducted on farms in New York State has provided insight into which cows truly benefit from oral calcium supplementation.  We will review the trial results to help you make practical decisions regarding post-calving calcium supplementation in your herds.

Registration is free, but required so we have an accurate count for refreshments.
Registration required by August 22nd-register online or contact Betsy Hicks at 607.391.2673 or email bjh246@cornell.edu.

New York Learning Circles - Soil Health & Your Land

More than one million women now own or manage farmland across America with many of these women inheriting their land from their spouse or parents. Research shows that women landowners can benefit from learning about conservation practices from other women landowners and conservation professionals. To reach the growing number of women landowners interested in conservation, American Farmland Trust, along with Cornell University Cooperative Extension, Northwest New York Dairy, Livestock & Field Crops Team & Ohio's Wood Soil & Water Conservation District, have joined together to offer a number of different opportunities to share information and learn more about preserving their land long into the future.

We hope that you can join us for 1 or more of our Learning Circles!  Invite a friend or family member to join you!!!
